What is a sprain?

A sprain occurs when a joint is twisted or placed under stress, causing the ligaments to stretch or become damaged. The ankle is particularly vulnerable, but sprains can also affect the wrist, fingers, knees and other joints.

It can be difficult to distinguish a severe sprain from a fracture without a medical examination.

Common symptoms of a sprain

Minor injuries and sprains may cause:
Pain in or around the joint
Swelling
Bruising
Tenderness
Stiffness
Reduced mobility
Pain when putting weight on the area
Difficulty using the body part normally
The symptoms depend on the location and severity of the injury.

Injuries we can assess

The doctor can assess:
Sprained ankle or wrist
Injuries to the knee, foot or hand
Muscle strains
Blunt-force injuries and bruising
Swelling and bruising after a fall
Pain after sports or physical activity
Suspected minor fractures
Need for further examinations
If a fracture or more serious injury is suspected, an X-ray or treatment at a public out-of-hours medical service or hospital may be necessary.

What can you do yourself?

Immediately after the injury, you can:
Rest the injured body part
Cool the area for short periods
Apply an elastic bandage
Keep the body part elevated
Avoid activities that increase the pain
Gently move the joint when the pain allows it
Avoid placing ice directly on the skin. A bandage should not be so tight that the body part becomes cold, numb or discoloured.

When should you contact a doctor?

Contact a doctor if:
The pain is severe or becoming worse
You are unable to put weight on the body part
The swelling is significant
Mobility is severely reduced
You have marked tenderness directly over a bone
The pain does not improve as expected
You have persistent numbness or tingling
The injury occurred after a severe fall or collision
If you have severe pain, swelling or difficulty moving your wrist after a fall, an X-ray may be needed to check for a fracture.

Severe injuries

Seek urgent medical help if:
The body part has an obvious deformity
A bone is visible through the skin
You have lost sensation or movement
The hand or foot becomes cold, pale or blue
The pain is extremely severe
The injury was caused by a serious accident
You have hit your head and become confused or difficult to wake
The condition is worsening rapidly
Contact the public out-of-hours medical service on 116 117 if the problem cannot wait. Call 113 in the event of a serious injury or a life-threatening condition.

Examination and treatment

The doctor will ask how the injury occurred, where the pain is located and whether you can move or put weight on the affected body part.

If necessary, the doctor may:
Examine the joints, muscles and bones
Assess mobility and stability
Assess sensation and blood circulation
Assess whether pain relief is needed
Apply a support bandage if needed
Assess whether you need a sick note
Refer you for an X-ray, physiotherapy or further treatment
Treatment depends on the type and severity of the injury. Most sprains improve gradually, but more severe injuries may take several weeks to heal.

Frequently asked questions about minor injuries and sprains in Oslo

How do I know whether it is a sprain or a fracture?

It can be difficult to distinguish a severe sprain from a fracture. Severe pain, significant swelling, tenderness directly over a bone or inability to put weight on the affected body part should be assessed by a doctor.

Should I use ice on a sprain?

Cooling the area for short periods may reduce pain and swelling. Wrap ice or a cold pack in a towel so that it does not come into direct contact with the skin.

Should I keep the joint completely still?

A short period of rest may be necessary. Gentle movement and gradual loading are usually beneficial as the injury improves, provided the pain allows it.

How long does a sprain last?

A mild sprain may improve within one to two weeks, while a more severe injury may take several weeks. Contact a doctor if the symptoms do not improve as expected.

Can I book a doctor’s appointment for a minor injury?

Yes. You can book an appointment at Easy Clinic for assessment of sprains, injuries from falls and other minor injuries. If there is an obvious deformity, a serious injury or severe pain, contact the public out-of-hours medical service on 116 117.
