What is a fever?

Fever means that the body temperature is higher than normal. A temperature above 38°C is generally considered a fever when measured rectally.

Fever is a natural response to illness and is often caused by a viral or bacterial infection. However, the temperature itself is not the only important factor. Your general condition and any other symptoms must also be assessed.

Common symptoms associated with fever

Fever may cause:
Chills or shivering
Sweating
Headache
Muscle aches
Weakness and fatigue
Reduced appetite
Thirst
Feeling generally unwell
Depending on the cause, you may also experience a cough, sore throat, ear pain, abdominal pain, nausea, a rash or pain when urinating.

Common causes of fever

Fever may be caused by:
A cold or influenza
Throat infection
Ear infection
Sinus infection
Respiratory infection or pneumonia
Urinary tract infection
Gastrointestinal infection
In some cases, fever may have other causes. The doctor will assess your symptoms, medical history and the findings from the examination.

When should you contact a doctor?

Contact a doctor if:
The fever is high or lasts for several days
The fever goes away and then returns
Your general condition is clearly affected
You have shortness of breath or chest pain
You have severe pain, a severe headache or a stiff neck
You are vomiting repeatedly or are unable to drink enough fluids
You have a fever together with a rash
You are pregnant, have a weakened immune system or a serious underlying condition

Fever in children

Fever is common in children and is often caused by an infection. Pay particular attention to whether the child is responsive and is drinking, urinating and breathing normally.

Children under three months of age with a fever should always be assessed by a doctor. Contact a doctor if the child is unusually drowsy, difficult to wake, refuses to drink, has difficulty breathing or develops a rash.

When should you seek urgent help?

Call 113 if the person with a fever:
Has severe difficulty breathing
Is unconscious or difficult to wake
Is confused or extremely unwell
Has bluish lips or skin
Has a seizure lasting more than five minutes
Has severe neck stiffness
Has a red or purple rash that does not fade when pressed
Becomes very unwell very quickly
For an acute illness that does not appear life-threatening but cannot wait until the next working day, contact the public out-of-hours medical service on 116 117.

Examination and treatment

The doctor will ask when the fever started, how high your temperature has been and what other symptoms you have.

If necessary, the doctor may examine your throat, ears, lungs, abdomen, skin and lymph nodes. Blood tests, a urine sample, a throat swab or other examinations may also be recommended.

Treatment depends on the cause. Viral infections often resolve on their own, while some bacterial infections may require antibiotics.

It is usually important to:
Drink enough fluids
Rest
Avoid strenuous physical activity
Monitor your general condition
Use fever-reducing medication if needed and if you can take it safely

Frequently asked questions about fever in Oslo

What temperature is considered a fever?

A temperature above 38°C measured rectally is generally considered a fever.

What is the difference between rectal, ear and forehead temperature measurements?

Rectal measurement generally provides the most reliable reading of core body temperature. Electronic ear thermometers and infrared forehead thermometers are convenient, but the result may be affected by positioning, measurement technique, earwax, perspiration and the surrounding temperature.

Follow the instructions for the thermometer and take another reading if the result seems unexpected. If you are unsure, particularly with young children, the temperature can be checked rectally.

Is a fever dangerous?

Fever is usually a normal response to infection. The most important factors are the cause, your general condition and any warning signs.

Do you need antibiotics for a fever?

Not necessarily. Fever is often caused by a virus, and antibiotics do not work against viruses.

Can I book a doctor’s appointment for a fever?

Yes. You can book an appointment at Easy Clinic if you would like a medical assessment of a fever or other symptoms.
